The boys worked in teams to construct towers out of the boxes and other items sent in last month.
They spent yesterday stacking and planning and today securing their towers with tape. It was a great learning experience. Tomorrow, the boys will participate in exploring different activities outside from 9:00 - 10:00. Please make sure your son is in proper clothing for the weather and to be active. This morning we spent time exploring numeracy concepts using Marion Small's book Eyes on Math. Ask your son about our discussion about the puddle measured by the boy and girl and then have them explain how we measured the carpet. The results were different for everyone who measured. This caused the boys to have to access their ability to reason and decide if non-standard measuring tools are the best method for communicating results.
This afternoon, the grade one students watched a video about healthy eating. We discussed what would happen if they ate cake for breakfast, lunch and dinner and then talked about nutritious alternatives. We also talked about making responsible choices over the summer and how to balance treats with food from the four food groups. We were able to participate in celebrating our volunteers at the Volunteers Tea this afternoon. Thank you SO much to everyone who took time to help the All Boys community! Our school environment wouldn't be the same without you. Room 5 worked on a literacy project using The Greedy Python written by Eric Carle. Ask your son about the story and what the project was.
We were all abel to enjoy the pizza party just before the kindergarten boys went home this morning. It was so yummy! The boys had a great time. Thank you to everyone who bought a raffle ticket so we ended up being the winners! The grade one's worked on completing their animals made out of plasticine. They did a great job of adding detail and paying attention to the colours and mixing them together to get the right shade. GREAT NEWS!! The K/1 class won the pizza party from the carnival.... We will have pizza delivered to our class tomorrow at 10:30.
The kindergarten students worked really hard in numeracy yesterday and today. They are working on making number sentences using dice. Grade one students have been finishing off their animal habitats and creatures using plasticine. We spent some time outside sketching things we see in nature - the boys worked with some of the grade 4 students. Have a great evening. The boys all worked on numeracy strategies this morning. Kindergarten were using number lines as a strategy to solve addition problems. Grade one students were looking at the relationship between addition questions and subtraction questions.
This afternoon, the grade ones visited the grade two class to prepare for the assembly and to look at their preying mantis habitats. The bugs are so interesting! As part of our grade one building things unit, the boys constructed teepees. We have been discussing how things are joined - nails, screws, glue, tape, rope. After watching a video detailing the traditional practices of first nations teepee erection, the boys asked if they could attempt to build teepees. They took a lot of patience and skill (and a few trial and errors lessons that were great learning opportunities) but the end results were amazing! This morning, we all worked on a special writing and art project that the boys will bring home on Friday. It required a lot of thought and great effort! The grade one students worked on preparing for the Friday assembly that we will participate in with the grade two students. After lunch, they finally began to create their animal habitats using plasticine! It was so fun for them to be able to make use of the information they had researched and put it into a visual form. This morning, we talked about summer and all of the fun activities the boys enjoy doing. They used that information to draw and write about what they are planning to do in July and August. Ask your son what they want to do!
The grade one students have been working on three dimensional shapes. We tested the strength of solid shapes yesterday. The boys discovered a cylinder is the strongest shape when standing on its end. Today, they attempted to build different solids using spaghetti noodles and marshmallows. The boys tried to make
Things we learned:
We had one of our students from grade one read us one of his favorite books "The Book With No Pictures". He did a fantastic job! Thank you Zach.
The whole class then did a writing/drawing assignment about their own favorite book. The boys have been going outside for gym this week and playing frisbee golf. This afternoon, the school had a practice lockdown. This can cause some anxiety for some of our boys. The grade one boys did a great job following the safety protocol and were quiet and calm throughout the process. The turn of the calendar to the month of June has caused great excitement in the classroom. The boys (and I) can't believe we put the last day of school sign on the calendar. We have spoken about staying focused and finishing the school year with a positive attitude and strong work ethic.
The boys are continuing to explore 2D and 3D shapes. They were investigating which shapes are best to use when stacking or building structures. This information will provide the students with background knowledge when we launch into our next science unit - Building Things. Literacy continues to be a focus during Daily Five, reading independently/in small groups and the investigation of the needs of plants and animals. The boys spent a good part of the morning learning about and investigating the relationship between 2D and 3D shapes.
When you are out and about in the community have your son search for : cylinders spheres pyramids prisms cones ( they will like want an ice cream cone!) We listened to the grade 5 and grade 6 boys present about their experience at outdoor school at our whole school assembly. There are a number of unclaimed utensils and tupperware containers in our classroom. If you are missing any, please let me know. I have asked the boys many times - none of them recognize them as belonging to them!! Here are some pictures of some of our learning experiences this week... |
