Hello Parents,
Numeracy - We worked on making shape pizzas and talked about patterns using different 2D shapes. Literacy - The grade one boy wrote sentences about their favourite ice cream flavour. We brainstormed ideas as to how to describe something using our five senses. The boys came up with some great descriptive words/sentences.
Numeracy
The boys worked really hard to show what they understand regarding numeracy Kindergarten boys were adding using dice and number lines. The concept of finding the first number on the number line and then counting up can be confusing to some learners. The biggest lesson the boys took away from this lesson was to "jump" only when they started counting. Grade one students worked on adding more than two digits to solve one equation. Initially, the boys were anxious but they quickly understood the concept and did really well working in partners or individually. We all visited the FIVE ducklings in the grade three classroom this morning! It was very exciting to see them all, notice the differences in their appearances and learn so much from the grade three students. Thank you to Ms Palmer and all of the boys for such a wonderful experience. We planted our sunflower seeds this morning! Many of them had sprouted in the water over the last few days. Each boy planted two seeds. We hope they will all grow with water, sunshine and lots of love.
This afternoon, the boys worked really hard on writing about their animal habitats and some students moved onto writing about the food their animal eats. We will continue to work toward proper sentence structure as we practice our writing skills. Reminder.... Please send your son's library books in so they are able to exchange them on Wednesday. We had a great few days this week.
Yesterday, the boys participated in the Knights Bravery Course. They all did such a great job! The boys conquered the following obstacles with great determination: Understrike Crawl of Doom Knights Wall Booming Beam Super Sized Scale Sprinkler Vault of Valour Today, the boys used their experience yesterday to draw and write about their favourite obstacle. Kids Talk: I really liked seeing my mom at the Knights Bravery Course. AD I liked going over the obstacles. ZW We celebrated my birthday today! BM I'm really happy to get a medal. I loved going under the Crawl of Doom and getting muddy. SG I love all the assemblies! CS I loved having a popsicle after the race. LC My favorite part was getting soaked. PH I liked climbing up the Knights Wall DB I liked getting the shirt and water bottle. CT My favourite part was climbing on the Booming Beam LH This morning, we looked at our sunflower seeds and discovered that some of them were sprouting! Over the next few days we will watch to see if the seeds begin to grow roots and then we will plant them.
We also noticed that the hugging tree's fruit is beginning to turn orange. One of the oranges fell off so the grade one boys were able to taste a small bit of the fruit. They said it was REALLY sour. To add to the excitement of the day, one of the eggs hatched in the grade three room. We went to meet "Olivia" this afternoon. The boys were thrilled to be able to see the "baby" and hear about how she hatched. We were able to learn about what the duckling needs when she is new and then watched a video upon returning to our class to find out how the ducks needs change as they grow. Tomorrow is LIBRARY DAY. Please send your son's library book(s) back to exchange tomorrow. There is a flyer about Carnival Day in your son's backpack. The Knights Bravery Course/Race will be held on Thursday. The boys are excited to participate. The kindergarten boys are invited to stay for the full day so they are able to complete the course as they have been training with the grade ones. Please make sure your son has WATER, SUNSCREEN and is wearing clothes that they can get dirty! Ms Temple will be with the boys tomorrow. We had a very exciting visitor to All Boys today - the BUG MAN!!!
He showed us the most amazing bugs and had so much incredible information about how he found, collected, grew or discovered the specimens. He even had two live scorpions. The boys learned some really interesting information about these creatures:
There is no school tomorrow or on Monday, May 20th. Happy Victoria Long Weekend. We started our day with a walk in the school ground to look for changes in nature compared to last week. The boys noticed:
The grade ones spent time on the lap tops this afternoon. Their task was to find images of their research animal and write down 8 - 10 things they noticed about how their animal physical features. They were to use their artists eyes to SEE and then their authors brain to WRITE about what they saw:
The class worked on recognizing, drawing and labelling defining characteristics of a variety of shapes this morning.
Kindergarten students were required to draw and name four shapes. Grade one students drew, named and identified how many sides and corners for seven shapes. When you are out and about, ask your son to identify shapes you see in the community. This reinforces the concepts they are learning at school. This afternoon, the grade one boys worked on Daily Five and spent time on the lap tops finding a good image of their research animal. We are planning on looking at identifying physical features of each of their animals over the remainder of this week, in preparation to reproduce the animals using plasticine in the weeks to come. With the temperatures rising (finally), Please ensure your son has a water bottle for the classroom, (Room 5 gets really warm in the heat of the day) and a hat to wear outside at recess. Thank you for your support The boys worked really hard on a writing and art activity today. They will bring the project home tomorrow!
We also spent time preparing for our assembly presentation tomorrow morning. The kindergarten boys will be talking about signs of spring and the needs of plants. The grade one students will be presenting what they have learned about the animal they have chosen to research. The boys were extremely busy and worked very hard today. Have a great night This morning, Ms Nicola our physiotherapist, visited our classroom to teach us some wonderful exercises for core strength.
Ask your son to show you the following exercises: Strong man Trapeze artist Contortionist Human cannon ball Unicycle Big Top Tight rope walker Clown For science ( signs of spring and need of plants) we started sunflower seeds. Ask your son the steps we followed to help the sunflower seeds grow. This afternoon, the grade one boys were joined by Mr Stanley's grade 5 students who helped us to learn how to log into the school lap top computers! The boys were very excited to be able to use the computers to assist in their animal needs research. The grade fives were extremely helpful and great leaders for the younger boys. |
