The boys had an amazing day!
Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered their time to make the trip to Repsol and the afternoon so much fun for all the students. REMINDER Tomorrow is LIBRARY DAY. Please have your son bring his book back to exchange. With some spring weather today, we went on a walk around the school grounds looking for signs of spring!
The boys found: Leaf buds Green grass Bird feathers Ants Dandelions and heard the birds singing! We are diving deeper into plants and their parts. The boys watched video showing the different parts of a plant (roots, stems, leaves, flowers and fruit) and their functions. Over the next few days we will begin starting our own seeds so we are able to see the parts of the plants growing with our own eyes. The grade one boys worked really hard on drawing and writing about the different parts of a story. Beginning, middle and end. The expectation in grade one is the students should be able to identify the three parts of a story, sequence them, describe them and illustrate/write about each part. Please ask your son to describe the story we focused on. REPSOL DAY TOMORROW Please send your son in his swim trunks with his towel and clothes in a separate bag. This will simplify the changing process for everyone! Kindergarten parents - I need to know if your son is going to stay for lunch and the afternoon movie. Wednesday - LIBRARY DAY. Please send in your son's books to be exchanged. We started our day with a health lesson around friendship focusing on three important factors of being a friend.
Friends
The boys were outside for physical education today to play Bocce ball! The grade ones are using their WORD books when writing. This reinforces independence in their writing and encourages the boys to use what they know about letters sounds, blends and sight words instead of relying on others for that information. You can help your son develop his skills by also encouraging him to sound out words when reading and writing at home. Reminder Please send in your son's hot dog form and money if he is wanting to participate on May 8th. Spring picture order forms are due, if you are interested I will be away tomorrow and Friday. Hello Parents,
Our area around the bear den is beginning to look a lot like spring! After listening to a spring story the boys drew bugs, flowers buds, leaf buds and worms and added them to the back drop behind the bear den. The grade threes invited the grade ones to see their worms and the new duck eggs. It was a very exciting afternoon learning about and holding worms! We learned:
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
We have been really busy in room 5 the last two days learning and creating
We have been working on have been being aware of what size a problem is ( kid size or adult size; small or big). Our Occupational Therapist, Ms Breanna read a story and spoke about tattling - a problem that can usually be solved by 1. Saying what you need 2. Talking 3. Walk Away 4. Get Help from an adult if you aren't able to solve it on your own OR if someone is in danger We have also been transforming our "cave" into a bears den. Over the next few weeks, we will be adding a lot of detail connecting to the science, math and literacy curriculum. Have a fantastic weekend. Yesterday and today, we have been looking at Google Maps both the regular and satellite versions. The boys were fascinated by the ability to see their actual houses/neighbourhoods.
This morning, we had a talking circle to discuss what is important or what they enjoyed about Repsol yesterday. Each student thought about a response and then wrote/drew to connect their thoughts to literacy practice. We also practiced our numeracy skills through a variety of learning centers and discussions. This afternoon, the grade one students watched a video on maps. The video talked about using a map key and symbols. The boys the looked at actual maps of Calgary to begin to practice their skills. They were full of questions and were all very curious to find the school and the area of Calgary in which their homes would be located. Hello Parents,
Upcoming dates Repsol tomorrow : Kindergarten - DRY LAND Grade One - SWIMMING Library: All boys need to bring their books back for exchanging on WEDNESDAY. The boys worked on writing this morning. Grade ones and some of the kindergarten boys were asked to write a minimum of three sentences about their weekend. The boys are working on the use of capitals, proper spacing and punctuation. The remaining kindergarten students were focusing on letter sounds. This afternoon, the grade one boys made, flew and measured the distance their paper airplanes landed from the wall. The furthest flight was 16m 17cm! We participated in literacy groups and had a fire drill. After the fire drill we had a discussion of the importance of staying calm and with the group and the differences between a fire drill and a lock down. We were incredibly lucky to have 5 of our grade 5/6 students with us for the entire day!
The older boys were incredible examples of leadership, friendship and how to be effective learners. They helped with literacy skills, art projects, research projects, and computer skills. We are so grateful for their presence and assistance today! Tomorrow is a Professional Development Day - no school for the students. We visited the grade 5/6 this morning to learn more about the solar system they have been researching and creating in their room. It was very interesting - the boys were full of interesting facts and information.
The kindergartens also focused on literacy skills and mastering letters/letter sounds and beginning sound recognition - all very important steps for reading. This afternoon, the grade ones worked on literacy, science (ask about the colour experiment we did outside), organized our height measurements from tallest to smallest and began talking about the difference between rural and urban communities. Have a great night The boys worked really hard today.
The kindergartens did a fantastic job working on subitizing and adding. The grade ones worked on measuring a partner with string and then using the string to find the height of their partner and themselves. This afternoon, the grade ones listed people in our community and talked about how everyone plays a role in making our neighbourhood a better place. They also participated in literacy groups with the grade 2 class which we do every afternoon Monday - Thursday. During talking circle we discussed friendship/problem solving skills and looked at choices we can make when it is a small issue. The boys chose three possibilities and wrote their choices in their writing book. There is a picture of the choices we discussed. It is a great reference to use with children to help them self regulate and learn how to solve problems respectfully. |
